The Cellist By Daniel Silva

cellist-daniel-silva-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

There are not enough positive adjectives in the English language to describe my personal assessment of Daniel Silva as a writer and storyteller. If I had more or better words, I’d use them to describe his latest novel. The Cellist is an amalgamation of some of the greatest books in the series, while also being incredibly timely by exploring the greatest threats to today’s geopolitical landscape.

When Victor Orlov, our favorite Russian billionaire, is murdered in his London home, clearly the victim of a Kremlin hit, Gabriel Allon is pitted against one of his oldest and most dangerous foes. When all the evidence points to an anti-Kremlin investigative journalist, Gabriel isn’t convinced and requests the opportunity to track the woman down. When he hears her side of the story, he is presented with the chance of a lifetime. Along with the help from his friends at The Office and allied European intelligence agencies, Allon aims to deal a blow to the foundation of the Russian leader’s power and at the same time stifle the attacks on Western institutions of democracy.

Each reader comes to a Silva book with certain expectations and preferences from subject matter to characters, and even locales. Daniel manages to lay out a sort of tapas style platter of goodies for every type of reader. There is just a bit of everything we’ve loved from Allon’s adventures over the years.

Did you fall in love with the series because of how art & music play a role in past novels… prepare to swoon again. Did you stay up all night reading previous books because of the complexity and daring nature of Allon’s plan… better get some coffee ready. Do you keep coming back because of an unhealthy connection to his fictional characters (perhaps that’s just me)… well great, there are so many of our favorites involved in one way or another.

Silva’s uncanny ability to outline and explain the complex nature of threats to Western democracies, we are propelled through the novel through incredible pacing, deep connection to the characters (both new and old), and the two ever present questions; how will Allon pull this off? And what will he have to sacrifice to do so?

With an unvarnished and, at times biting, criticism of the current American political climate, Silva walks that fine line between fiction and reality as he outlines the truth of our reality through the lens of his fictional characters. With friends and family who live around the world, the same sentiments and viewpoints that Allon holds within the pages are the same opinions that have been expressed to me time and time again. I feel that Daniel’s portrayal of what our allies and enemies have seen and learned over the past few election cycles is spot on. Whether you agree with that or not… that’s up for you to decide.

The overall reading experience of this novel was like going to see your favorite band growing up who have reunited for a single concert. Sure… they’re going to play all the greatest hits and you’ll love every second of it. You’ll sing along to all the words, you’ll play air drums when the beat takes hold of you, but it’s not exactly how you remember. In fact, it’s even better. Why? It’s the bits of improvisation and raw emotion the musicians are playing with today that make the songs almost new, while at the same time incredibly familiar.

Like a family member who comes to visit for a weekend once a year, upon completion of the book we are left yearning for more on Gabriel. Alas, we are simply left to wait. Always the waiting.

Razorblade Tears By S.A. Cosby

razorblade-tears-sa-cosby-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

Razorblade Tears is an instant classic, not just in the thriller genre, but in American literature. I think back to some of the books that had a profound impact on my life and this is near the top. For me, this is a modern equivalent, or at least of the same importance, to books like To Kill a Mockingbird or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I honestly believe it will be required reading in school sometime in our lifetime.

I’m going to skip a recap of the story and tell you to simply read the description on the links or the jacket when it’s published. I can’t summarize it any better than they have. Instead I will say this…this book is centered on revenge, recompense, and retribution. With those powerful motivators, there is no telling what the protagonists are willing to do in pursuit of justice for their murdered sons.

Based on Cosby’s debut Blacktop Wasteland (which I absolutely loved), I assumed that his second novel was going to be a high octane thriller that leaned heavy on the action and violence and it was… but it turned out to be so much more. While there is more than enough action throughout the entire book to keep the most diehard thriller fan satisfied, it is the incredible emotional depth and layers that takes it beyond the typical story for this genre. Regardless of your race, economic status, sexual orientation, or anything else you might be characterized by…this is a book that we can all relate to. It holds up a mirror to modern America and asks the simple questions…who are we at this moment and who do we want to be going forward?

It is a thought provoking tale that is timeless, yet somehow timely as well. When you combine that with fast paced action scenes, relatable characters, and a hyper-realistic writing style then you have a book that transcends social boundaries and forces people to take stock of themselves and the world around them. Cosby takes his readers right up against all the self imposed barriers that separates us as individuals and, with the genius of his writing, gives us a little boost in the hope we lift ourselves over them.

Cosby’s distinct writing style is brilliant through its simplicity; succinct, vivid, and relatable all at the same time. Rather than the normal feeling of reading a great book, Cosby is able to teleport you to a familiar location where it feels more like you’re sitting around together as a party is winding down and then he leans forward, a slight grin on his face, and says…“y’all want to hear something crazy?”

To say this is a ‘must read’ is an understatement. This is REQUIRED reading and should win every possible award this year.

Falling By T.J. Newman

t-j-newman-falling-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

Falling is everything you want in a summer blockbuster; fast paced, frightening, and funny.

While the premise of the story is not necessarily new to fans of the genre (a pilot’s family is kidnapped and will be killed if he doesn’t crash the plane), it is the characters that set this story apart from any comparisons.

There is no Tier One operator on board ready to save the day with a flurry of punches and kicks in a confined space. There is no extravagant plan to fly someone up and infiltrate through the cargo hold. There are just everyday people in an extraordinary situation and all they can rely on is themselves.

Newman has created incredibly relatable and realistic characters, putting you right inside their heads as the tension elevates page after page. Sympathetic antagonists, admirable and resourceful protagonists, and understandable supporting characters are all on display throughout the book. You can’t stop reading because you truly care about the outcome. I think people would be hard pressed to not immediately identify the characters with someone in their own lives.

A sharp and descriptive writing style moves the book along quickly and the unique vantage point of how a flight crew would respond in such a scenario is a refreshing change up to a thriller set at 35,000 feet. The fact that this is a debut novel is all the more impressive to me.

The general action and suspense of the story is praiseworthy on its own, but I want to point out and applaud Newman for highlighting and bringing renewed attention to a particular and important topic. I will refrain from spoiling it here, but after reading the book... for those of you unfamiliar with or with a passing knowledge on the subject, as T.J. suggests in her story... perhaps it is time we all educate ourselves further and then determine how best to help.

Sleeping Bear By Connor Sullivan

connot-sullivan-sleeping-bear-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

The thriller genre has been blessed with a wealth of new talent in recent years and Connor Sullivan is poised to be the breakout star of 2021 with his roaring debut Sleeping Bear.

The siren song of the Alaskan wilderness has caused many to pull up stakes and head to the great north in order to take stock and reshape their lives. Army veteran Cassandra ‘Cassie’ Gale is no exception. Where she does stand out from the majority of other adventurous souls headed towards the Arctic circle is her mental fortitude, fighting ability, and intellectual prowess. All attributes she honed; first under her father’s tutelage in Montana, then at Ranger School.

When Jim Gale receives a phone call stating his daughter failed to show up in Anchorage as planned, he immediately heads out to find her. His list of potential dangers to his daughter included the usual; dehydration, hypothermia, and the potential of a bear attack. When he arrives at Cassie’s abandoned campsite near the Yukon border the threats multiply and in order to track her down, he must draw on the skills he acquired when he was a different man...in a different life.

Across the Bering Sea, Cassie finds herself in a sadistic prison experiment being used as a pawn in an unseen battle between one of the most powerful men in Russia and the man who killed his son.

Sleeping Bear is tremendously written with characters that immediately draw you in. Pacing that propels readers from one chapter to the next, the right amount of suspense and intrigue, and scenarios that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up… this is the type of novel that checks all the boxes and should be on the reading list for every thriller fan.

Target Acquired By Don Bentley

don-bentley-target-acquired-best-thriller-books-wilkins.jpg

Who doesn’t love an all expenses paid trip to a country you’ve been wanting to visit and all you have to do is a couple hours of work for a buddy?

Target Acquired explores just that topic… with a slight twist. While on a routine task in Israel, Jack Ryan Jr. literally walks into an assassination attempt on an American and her young son. Then things just go sideways from there. What starts out as a more personal mission to return a lost item to the child, Jack soon finds himself entangled in an international plot that directly threatens the state of Israel and looks to upend the entire global power structure. Through grit, brazen stubbornness, and a healthy dose of sheer force of will, Jack Jr. pummels his way through enemy after enemy to save an innocent woman and her child.

There is an old adage that says “no plan survives first contact with the enemy,” but with Jack Ryan Jr. it’s closer to “everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth”. Actually, it’s more like Jack doesn’t have a plan UNTIL he’s punched in the mouth. His brawling nature and general level of determination makes Jack one of my favorite characters in the larger Clancy universe.

I’m a big fan of all the characters on the team at The Campus, but Target Acquired is focused almost entirely on Jack Jr. and I think that brings out a new dimension to the series as a whole. Don Bentley really propels Jack’s overall character development in this story and we see him start to grow as an operator. With an increased level of trust in his own instincts/decisions and his unshakeable drive to do what is right, consequences be damned, Jack’s future looks to be very, very interesting.

Target Acquired is also a big step forward in Bentley’s writing and there is a level of maturity to his storytelling on display that will continue to make both his Matt Drake and the Jack Ryan Jr. series must reads every year.

The action sequences are riveting, the plotline intriguing and unique, but it’s the multifaceted emotional content that make this one of the best books I’ve read so far this year. This is the type of book that will hit you differently based on when you read it during your life. If I had read it in my 20s, the action and story would have fulfilled all my adrenaline needs. As a parent, Jack’s entire reason for initially tracking down the woman and child pulls on your heartstrings. And if there was a desire for a bit of flirtatious fun with a tough and funny Israeli agent… Bentley provides that as well.

For anyone who is nervous about a new author penning the Clancy series, let me tell you that I have unwavering faith and never question two things; 1) the route Waze tells you to follow (story for another time) and 2) THE Tom Colgan’s editorial choices and author selections. Bentley absolutely proves he was the correct choice to continue the series.

If you’re a long time reader of the Clancy series or this is your first time picking up one, Target Acquired will be one you remember.

Divided States By Rick Treon

divided-states-rick-treon-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

Divided States is a fun and action packed work of speculative fiction that keeps readers engaged through a combination of ever increasing threat levels and unravelling the mysterious history of former detective Lori Young.

After surviving a coordinated attack, Lori is kidnapped in the attempt to force her ex-husband and his security team into hijacking a nuclear weapon. Put into an impossible situation and unsure who is working for which side, Lori is hell bent on helping and must dig into her traumatic past to call upon the skills she’s been honing for a lifetime.

Complete with shootouts, hand to hand combat, and vehicles operating in whiteout conditions, the action is constant as the story progresses. While all that is happening, the reader is left deciding who can be trusted and which operatives from which of the new nation states they are rooting for.

With solid pacing, good writing, and interesting characters, I hope Divided States is the start of a series featuring Lori Young and crew.

Sons Of Valor By Andrews & Wilson

sons-valor-andrews-wilson-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

I've probably run out of superlatives for Andrews & Wilson in my previous reviews, but I'll try and find some new ones.

Sons of Valor is the first of this offshoot series and the latest addition to the Tier One universe. Featuring Navy SEAL Keith ''Chunk'' Redman as he leads the reconstituted Tier One team.

With a new streamlined structure that partners the door kicking operators with highly nimble, team specific intel analysts, the new Tier One team finds itself pitted against an advanced and evolved upstart terror cell. After decades of fighting against the Americans and learning from the successes and failures of ISIS and Al-Qaeda, the new group seeks to level the battlefield after acquiring a piece of weaponry previously thought impossible.

With Former CIA analyst Whitney Watts on board the new Tier One team, she identifies a possible new threat and must overcome her own personal reservations to push the theory up the chain of command. With an astute mind and ability to see patterns where others do not, Watts adds another dimension to the team that had been previously lacking.

Sons of Valor brings all the intensity, action, and necessary emotion to suck you into the story with an unyielding grip and propel you to the end like you were strapped to a Hellfire missile. The pacing is light speed, the tension palpable, and the danger close. You'll find yourself  flipping pages faster than Chunk can fall out of the sky in a Russian made helicopter.

If you have not previously read the Tier One series featuring fan favorite John Dempsey and are unfamiliar with Chunk, I highly recommend checking that out as well. That being said, Sons of Valor stands on it's own and  is sure to have it's own dedicated fanbase.

Arctic Storm Rising By Dale Brown

dale-brown-arctic-storm-rising-todd-wilkins.jpg

With an updated take on a primary Cold War fear, Dale Brown takes readers on a bone chilling and spine tingling adventure through the frozen north. Not unlike Brown’s previous work, his newest hero Nick Flynn and his misfit bunch of military rejects might as well be on the other side of the moon when it comes to getting rapid support from the folks down in Juneau.

When the CIA catches word that a rogue Russian pilot responsible for testing the latest stealth bomber is wanting to defect, as well as cash in on the cutting edge technology, the US has to choose if the offer is too good to pass up or too good to be true. While the powers that be in Washington decide, the soldiers on the ground are tasked with battling the elements and enemies in the harshest of environments.

Dale Brown crafts some great characters, sprinkles in the perfect amount of intrigue and misdirection, and ends the book in a great place to take this series in some really fun directions. The new Nick Flynn series will be a must read for me each year.

Bone Rattle By Marc Cameron

bone-rattle-marc-cameron-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

Bone Rattle is everything we’ve come to expect from one of the best authors in the genre. Marc Cameron has created one hell of a protagonist. Deputy US Marshall Arliss Cutter is one of those characters that is easy to admire, sympathize with, and root for every step of the way. With the ‘Grumpy’s Man Rules’ as his guide, Arliss is a no nonsense, old school type of guy who says what he means and does what he says. It’s easy to understand why he’s a thriller fan favorite.

Marc Cameron is one of those author’s with a writing style that just kind of sneaks up on you and grips you in a bear hug before you even know what happens. His books are detailed without being overbearing, fast paced without being over the top, and an unbelievable blend of a throwback to classic procedurals, but incorporates modern plotlines. Anything Cameron produces, you can guarantee it’s on my TBR list.

This particular book sees Arliss and his kickass partner Lola Teariki tasked with securing a sequestered jury during a major drug case down in Juneau, but soon turns into a full fledge manhunt when individuals, hell bent on keeping their involvement in the criminal enterprise hidden, take matters into their own hands. Cutter teams up with a local journalist as they try to find a missing girl who holds the key to unlocking everything. Bone Rattle includes the traditional crime thriller threats to the physical well being of the characters, but the internal and emotional development of Arliss (and even the lesser characters) is every bit as enthralling and you keep hoping for a positive outcome, regardless of the circumstances.

If you haven’t read either of the previous two Arliss Cutter books and you’re a fan of Walt Longmire, Joe Pickett, and the like… you will absolutely love this series.

On another note… Mr. Cameron you owe me at least two nights of sleep. One for keeping me up reading and the other for combining three of my biggest fears into a single scenario and causing me to debate what I would actually do if I were in the same situation. Not cool man! Well… actually, it was really cool. I cannot wait for the next Cutter book to come out.

The Devil's Hand By Jack Carr

devils-hand-jack-carr-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

In The Devil’s Hand you’ll find a decidedly large amount of death, detail, and deliberation. A seemingly odd trio that only an author with Jack Carr’s writing skills can combine in an enthralling novel that is as much a discussion of history and policy, as it is an outright action thriller.

If there is one thing that fans have come to expect from any Jack Carr book it is violence of action. The intense brutality that James Reece brings down upon his enemies is second to none in the genre. It is not any particular level of destruction or gimmicky Hollywood stunts that make Carr’s fight scenes so visceral, rather it is the personal nature, the blow by blow explanation of how the fight unfolds, as well as another of Carr’s trademarks… the description.

As the saying goes… the Devil is in the details. Carr continues to craft scenes with an insanely high level of detail that rather than bogging down the story, it does the opposite and helps readers create an even clearer mental picture of what is happening on the page. As all great writers do, Carr touches on each of the five senses as he describes the circumstances his characters find themselves in. Along with scene setting, Carr excused an almost professorial tone in his explanations of the history, policy, and people that have influenced the world he builds in his books. I often find myself making notes on items to research further on my own when I finally put the book down.

With a story set in a post-COVID world, including the President of the United States and a terrorist plot to ramp up an already hyper partisan US citizenry against itself, it would be almost impossible for some political deliberation and discussion not to find its way onto the pages. In the current political climate and while COVID still impacts daily life, a book about a viral bioweapon and scheming politicians may cause some readers to second guess picking this book up. That would be a mistake. A very BIG mistake. This is an incredibly entertaining read that thriller fans pre-order ASAP. The only reason I bring it up is that the action and real story do take a bit of time to get going and a large portion of that initial part is heavy on the political discussion.

That being said… there is one particular stance that Carr holds that nearly ruined the book for me and is something that I guarantee will be brought up next time we chat. His anti-soccer rhetoric must be denounced and a full discussion about the merits of the beautiful game should be scheduled with all deliberate speed!

Other than the soccer stuff… it is a fantastic book that both new readers and diehard fans will enjoy.

Amira By Matthew Betley

matther-betley-amira-todd-wilkins.jpg

Very few authors in the thriller genre can craft an in your face, throat punch of an action sequence like Matthew Betley. This is something readers have come to expect and Betley continues to deliver each and every time. Though technically a novella, Amira includes as much action and entertainment as a full length novel. As a huge fan of the Logan West series and universe, I didn’t realize how much I missed it until I started reading.

With the focus being squarely on the origin story and the events that have led up to Task Force Ares member Amira Cerone finding herself restrained to a chair and at the mercy of two unknown assailants. Alone and bound, Amira must dig deep into her reserve of courage and resilience. As she quickly learns, her past has finally caught up to her and the question is, what does that mean for her immediate future?

What is great about Betley’s writing is while his style can best be described as a Hollywood blockbuster on the page, it’s the small character development and emotional points in the story that really hit home for me and so many readers. Touching on instances from previous books, fans of the Logan West series are able to fill in the small gaps in those stories making me want to reread them all over again.

Amira is a story that you’re going to slam out in one sitting. So grab yourself a copy and then buckle up, because once you start reading… you’re not going to stop.

Sangre Road By David Tromblay

Sangre Road is the kind of book that is so good it makes you want to send hate mail to the author. The tragic events that David Tromblay writes will crush your heart. You wish he’d just take your sense of hope and bury it in a shallow grave off the shoulder of a rural highway, but he keeps digging deeper like he’s looking for oil or natural gas in the red clay of your soul.

In rural Oklahoma, circa 1995, bounty hunter Moses Kincaid is hot on the tracks of someone who skipped bond. What should have been a relatively routine operation, turns into a series of off the wall adventures including run-ins with bikers, wrestlers, drugged up zombies, and all the rural greasy spoon diners and cheap motels you could ever want.

If you are a fan of smartmouthed, sarcastic sonsofbitches and all the pain and suffering that deservedly comes their way, then Moses ‘Moe’ Kincaid is the man for you. I liked Moe instantly and my fondness for him only grew throughout the book. The same could be said for all of the characters that appear on the pages. Having grown up in and around the people and places like those depicted, the authenticity of the individuals and environments cannot be questioned.

Tromblay writes in a wordy style that should make other writers envious. He somehow manages to inject color and texture into all of his sentences and dialogue without slowing down the pacing. It is an impressive feat that should be acknowledged and celebrated.

Had I read this book when it was first published, it would have been on one of my “best of” lists for 2021.

The Tipping Point By David Darling

david-darling-tipping-point-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

The Tipping Point is a terrific debut from author David Darling. With highly relatable characters, a complex story, and some proper plot twists. This is the type of book that thriller fans will absolutely enjoy. It’s a perfect weekend read.

Sergeant Noah Hunter is an ‘everyman’ protagonist who possesses a strong sense of right and wrong and is easy for readers to get behind. After being threatened to back off a murder investigation, his moral code refuses to let him and continues to pursue the killer. When the unthinkable happens and his world is literally turned upside down, he has to ask himself how far (both physically and emotionally) he’s willing to go to find those responsible.

Darling has a simplistic writing style that is a perfect mirror of his main character… and I mean that as a compliment. It’s not overly detailed or laborious to read, instead he saves the complexity for the plotlines. The prose is accessible and moves the story along at a solid pace by not wasting any words. It’s lean, descriptive, and keeps you cruising through chapter after chapter. I found the overall plot was nuanced enough to continually peak my interest throughout and the action sequences were believable and well written.

My only “complaint” is that we still don’t know who the outside forces were and what angle they were playing at. It’s only a “complaint” because I don’t want to wait for the next book to come out. I’ll have to get over my abundance of impatience as I anxiously look forward to book two in the Noah Hunter series.

Well done David and I can’t wait to see what you have in store for you fans.

The Beirut Protocol By Joel Rosenberg

joel-rosenberg-beiruit-protocol-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

The physical and psychological danger in The Beirut Protocol is constant and readers know that eventually... everyone breaks. The question is how long can Marcus Ryker hold out and what will he give up in the end?

Joel Rosenberg is a master at intertwining multiple complicated plotlines and has an unquestionable level of expertise regarding the Middle Eastern. Though a slight departure from the previous books in the Marcus Ryker series, The Beirut Protocol is a well constructed story of capture and survival. When Ryker, Kailea Curtis, and their Israeli chaperone are abducted in an unexpected and daring raid, the recent gains in Arab-Israeli relations are put to the test. Combined with a dramatic shift in the power dynamics of Tehran, the entire region is hurtled towards the precipice of war.

The usual high octane action scenes and shootouts against enemy actors are replaced by perilous psychological situations that hostages must endure and overcome. The physical abuse and likelihood of death has never been higher for Ryker, but as a man accustomed to dodging bullets... how will he fair when he is at the mercy of his captors?

This book takes us deeper into Ryker's mind under extreme duress as he is forced to rely heavily on his training and his faith. I personally believe the exploration of Marcus as a character bodes well for the long term success of the series and gives readers a firmer understanding of the driving forces behind Ryker's decision making paradigm.

I did feel there were some general areas left wanting. A missed opportunity for me was the failure to include more on the true identity of the third hostage and the dramatic issue that would have caused. While I also enjoyed the finale, I felt Rosenberg had done such a great job consistently turning the screws and heightening the tension and suspense, but then all of a sudden Ryker seems not to be phased by his ordeal and the old Ryker comes out. This seemed a bit rushed to me and took slightly away from what was an otherwise enjoyable read.

2034 By Ackerman & Stavridis

2034-best-thriller-elliot-ackermanbooks-todd-wilkins.jpg

2034 is an intriguing work of speculative fiction that requires anyone with a passing interest in geopolitics to pick up this book and dive in. Set in the near future, Ackermand and Stavridis envelope readers quickly in the new world they envision and the events leading to its creation.

What if China possessed cyber weapons that could shut down US strategic assets? How would the US respond? Would other powers like Russia and Iran take advantage of the opportunity? Which nation would step up to help calm the escalating tension that could easily lead to nuclear disaster? All of these questions are explored within this gripping tale told at the personal level.

Including a diverse cast of characters that I easily identified and sympathized with, the story is ripe with conflicting interests, personality clashes, and life and death decisions further emphasized with the gut wrenching impact on the individuals living through the experiences.

Not since Red War in 2019 have I enjoyed a large-scale warfare book like this.

The Outside Man By Don Bentley

outside-man-don-bentley-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

When people say a book is a 'rollercoaster ride' there is the expectation of a series of highs and lows. That description would be inaccurate for Don Bentley's second book The Outside Man.

Sticking with the rollercoaster analogy, The Outside Man is closer to starting the ride with a big drop (opening scene), riding up a short hill (establishing the players involved), and then once you crest that hill... it's a heart in your throat, white knuckle plunge until the last page.

The book begins with the reader finding Matt Drake's past actions in the Middle East catching up with him in the least expected place, his hometown of Austin, TX. For those of us lucky enough to spend any time in the city that 'keeps it weird', it's easy to put yourself right in the situation and visualize how the events unfolded and the how the resulting ramifications put Drake on his path.

From there, Bentley takes us on a high octane ride full of speed, violence, and the perfect number of 80s movie references. In describing the various shootouts, he deftly touches on all five sense to immerse the reader in the moment. While the action scenes are as good as it gets in the thriller genre, Bentley does a masterful job of intertwining deeply emotional plotlines and a real sense of danger for every character.

If I hadn't already known, there is no chance I would have imagined this was Bentley's second novel. The thriller genre has another must read series on it's hands, from an author who is an proficient at his trade as his main character is at his chosen profession.

Dark Sky By C.J. Box

cj-box-dark-sky-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

They say that "all politics is local", but can the same be said about murder and revenge? In Dark Sky we are forced to ask ourselves very simple questions. How would I respond? What would I do?

When a social media mogul and his entourage come to his valley for an elk hunt, Joe Pickett is tapped to guide the group. Faced with political pressure from the highest levels in the state and countless colleagues depending on him for their livelihoods, Joe is thrust into the uneasy position of deciding whether frontier justice reigns supreme in Wyoming or not. All the while his friend Nate Romanowski pursues his own form of retribution against a Falconer who has broken the unwritten rules of their profession.

C.J. Box does an exquisite job of crafting two concurrent storylines that had me openly rooting for opposing philosophical stances based on which character was doling out justice. Only a true master of his craft can achieve that.

Dark Sky is a wild ride of survival and self reflection that forces its readers to determine who has the moral high ground when the modern world meets the traditions of our past.

This is a must read in 2021!

The Kaiser's Web By Steve Berry

steve-berry-kaiser-web-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

The Kaiser’s Web is a tense and tightly written story that spans three continents. With all of the historical mystery and plot twists that Steve Berry’s fans have come to love and expect, this book is entertaining and informative from the opening page.

When the two leading candidates for the Chancellor of Germany ratchet up the political pressure in the final days before the election, details from the past will shape the country's future. Cotton Malone and Cassiopeia Vitt are conscripted into unraveling the mystery of what actually happened surrounding Hitler's final moments in the Fürherbunker. The truth could have dire consequences, not just for those involved, but for the entire continent.

With the beautiful and detailed description of each local and setting, readers are immersed in the sights, sounds, and smells of various high range valleys of the Alps and Andes to the sun soaked fields of Africa. Reading Berry's descriptions is often like closing your eyes and picturing a postcard. The level of attention to the surrounding environment is always appreciated.

Berry also deftly inserts and discusses one of the most pressing political issues of modern Europe, the rise of the 'New-Right' political parties across the continent.

Relentless By Mark Greaney

Relentless is a word that can easily describe both the protagonist and the author who brings him to life on the page.

In his 10th Gray Man novel, Mark Greaney does not disappoint and has crafted another high paced, action packed thriller that keep readers engrossed in the increasingly dire circumstances Court Gentry and his team finds themselves in.

Relentless takes us from the outskirts of Caracas to the very heart of power in Germany, with stops across the Middle East.

Still recovering in a CIA hospital bed, the Gray Man is sent out by his handlers to track down a former NSA employee who made off with an all powerful facial recognition program capable of outing any and all U.S. intelligence officers. From there things only get more complex and dangerous, both physically and emotionally, as a variety of intelligence services and their shooters see shifting alliances change from moment to moment. Just when you think you have it sorted out, Greaney fires a plot twist that will have you scrambling to identify the real danger.

The only way the Poison Apple team will survive is to band together and continue to track down their targets and unravel the parties responsible. All that matters is the end result. They cannot let exhaustion, illness, or wounds stop them from achieving their goals. In other words, they must be... RELENTLESS.

Prodigal Son By Gregg Hurwitz

gregg-hurwitz-prodigal-son-best-thriller-books-todd-wilkins.jpg

Gregg Hurwitz brings his top notch action writing style to the pages of Prodigal Son, while also making readers feel each and every emotional shot to the heart like it was a round from Smoak's ARES 1911 pistol.

For fans of the Orphan X series, this one is going to hit a little different than previous books. While it comes with all of the danger and general awesomeness that we expect from Evan Smoak, the 6th installment touches on something much more dangerous for the protagonist... his past and his lineage.

After receiving a call from an unknown number from Argentina, Evan must decide if he wants to continue his transition into "normal life" or take one last mission as The Nowhere Man. That decision catapults him down an unexpected and perilous road, both physically and mentally.

The overall storyline, weaponry description, and technological advancements are absolutely fantastic. We also see more character development from the other important individuals in Evan's life. Joey, Dog, Mia, and Peter all play key roles in this book. This is an added layer to the book and I think ratchets the series up a notch.

If you've never read anything from the Orphan X series, I'd recommend you read at least one of the earlier books before picking this one up. As a stand alone book, it was highly entertaining and enjoyable, but after talking with long time fans of the series, with their historical knowledge of the characters... it was heart wrenching for them.
