Hitmen, a Hurricane, and Hunka Hunka burning love headline this humorous and hostile story. Hell of a Mess is a quirky, fast paced thriller that demonstrates Nick Kolakowski’s ability to find the hilarity and heartfelt in the absurd.
In the midst of a once in a century storm, a simple heist in a New York City penthouse proves to be anything but. Fiona has spent most of her life thieving, and sometimes killing, so this job should have been a walk in the park. Unfortunately Mother Nature and Murphy’s Law have other plans. While Fiona has her own problems to sort out, her hustler husband Bill finds himself abducted and having to cut in some crooked cops on his caper to recover money from the Mob he used to work for. No matter how you look at it, it’s going to be a hell of… well, you know.
While it is not necessary that you have read Love & Bullets… you should. Definitely go get yourself a copy. Being familiar with the backstory of Bill and Fiona makes Hell of a Mess that much better, plus Love & Bullets is a fun read. I mean, how can you not love a book that features a hitman in an Elvis jumpsuit wreaking havoc in middle of nowhere Oklahoma? The other benefit of having read the first book is understanding how impactful that same hitman’s appearance in Hell of a Mess really is.
Either way, if you like biting, quick witted dialogue, borderline absurd happenstance, and deeply flawed characters that you can’t help but cheer for… then this is your book and Nick Kolakowski is your writer.
