Grasping Smoke By Michael Hearns

Michael Hearns is not messing around in his second novel with the speed and violence of action he employs throughout these pages. Hearns waves a beautiful tapestry of the seedy underbelly of 1998 Miami as undercover Vice Intelligence and Narcotics (VIN) Detective Cade Taylor tries to navigate a case he just happened to stumble upon and is progressively pulled deeper in.

As Cade careens upon a high speed investigation, it morphs into something far more sinister with each new dead body that appears on the streets throughout Miami. Cade and a detective from Miami homicide must put their combined knowledge together to stop this killer before they strike again.

Hearns created a wildly entertaining and grippingly real read. He writes the streets of Miami that only a native Miamian could with such detail that I feel every street corner and see the sunset dancing of off the water. We meet Cade six months post divorce, and we watch him grapple with what kind of person is he, and what does he want to do with his life: does he continue with what he knows, or does he change it up? This story line added a layer of stress and heartbreak to our character that made him so much more grounded and real. This was a gripping and gritty read that will take the reader on one wild ride throughout the streets of Miami that is not to be missed!
