From start to finish, the narrative steams ahead at full speed with all the cloak and dagger secrecy spy thriller fans enjoy immensely and before you know it, you’re knee deep in bullets and explosives. You’re compelled to join Flynn as he takes out bad guys by infiltrating the enemy bases on foot, via dangerous aerial incursions, or by utilizing cool near-futuristic transports that sound like something out of Star Wars but with a more grounded feel to them. Brown’s descriptions of weaponry and equipment add that touch of grittiness to the as-of-yet-science-fiction elements which immensely raises the stakes for the whole narrative.
As the third entry in the Nick Flynn series, Weapons of Opportunity is a major escalation for the conflict between The Quartet Directorate and Raven Syndicate as the finale is both a win and loss for the good guys. Brown wonderfully sets up a high stakes face-off that remains to be resolved, on par with the best in the thriller genre.
For readers who like their action sequences bursting with badass tech and intense skirmishes in an almost non-stop pacing, Weapons of Opportunity is an immensely satisfying story with all the elements of an extraordinary thriller.
