If there’s one thing I love as much as action in a thriller, it’s the suspense that keeps me on the edge of my seat flipping the pages even if it’s way past midnight. Straight out of watching Netflix’s Mindhunter, I wanted a dark and visceral story in the same vein. Into the Black Nowhere is exactly what I craved to read.
After UNSUB’s twisting ending, Caitlin Hendrix has joined FBI’s elite Behavioral Analysis Unit. When a deranged serial killer near Austin starts preying upon women, killing them in gruesome ways and dressing them up like dolls, Hendrix must profile the killer by getting inside his violent thoughts, and catch him before the killer picks his next victim by the week’s end. This sets up an enthralling race against time where Hendrix has to outsmart a modern-day Ted Bundy.
I literally could not put the book down for even a breather. Meg Gardiner builds up the narrative with extreme suspense without losing any momentum. The clues unfold in smart and believable fashion, making you feel like you’re solving the murders with Caitlin Hendrix and her team. The nail-biting pace is terrifyingly and irresistibly refreshing, with copious amounts of twists and turns that keep the investigation engaging. At the same time, Caitlin Hendrix continues to be developed wonderfully as a badass FBI agent with a strong emotional epicenter that keeps her vulnerable without weakening her resolve.
I commend Meg Gardiner for a fresh take on the serial killer trope with a strong inspiration from real life cases. The action-packed finale explodes with the intense energy that was building up from the moment Hendrix and the killer first crossed paths. UNSUB drew me towards Meg Gardiner’s work but Into the Black Nowhere made me a true fan!
