David Darling’s crime thrillers hit you right in the gut with unrestrained brutality and grittiness. Grim Measures is a poignant story powered by terrifying emotions and a thought-provoking question of what lengths a doting father will go to in order to save his child.
John is a single parent, working hard to raise his daughter Ava on his own. His world is turned upside down when Ava is kidnapped from her room. With no leads in the investigation, John takes it upon himself to save her when the kidnapper orders John to kill the lead FBI agent on the kidnapping case in exchange for his daughter’s life, forcing John to choose between his morals and his duties as a family man.
Such an emotional topic would normally necessitate a full-length novel to properly explore the harrowing ramifications. However, David Darling remarkably paints an immersive and uncompromising portrait of John’s distress and his descent into despair in a short length. He also packs an impressive amount of realistic and cinematic action as John becomes quite the marksman with his wife’s Sig M18 and goes on the dark path of vigilantism.
If you feel like refreshing your mind with a fine dark thriller that is guaranteed to be the pick-me-up on a dull day, I urge you to read Grim Measures. The ending will definitely catch you off-guard.
