Nico and Lyla are both going through the motions of everyday life. Nico, trying to get his acting career off the ground, is always looking for the next big thing. Lyle, a PhD in virology in south London, doesn’t need the hustle and bustle of making it famous, she just wants to be appreciated for her work. When Baz from Effing Productions comes calling and letting Nico know about the opportunity of a lifetime.
One Perfect Couple is a soon to be sold to reality TV show that has five couples battling challenges and a resort island, testing their resolve and dedication to each other, while being filmed nonstop. Throw in your classic alpha male jock types, a couple models, aspiring actors, social media influencers, and one PhD holding ‘girl next door’, and you have all the ingredients lined up for a train wreck you can’t stop watching.
What begins as a chance to win a small fortune in paradise and boost their social status, soon turns deadly as a deadly storm decimates the island and everyone’s life forever. Lyla and the survivors of the storm need to ride out the precarious castaway like conditions with what remaining food and water they have, while waiting to be rescued. How to survive quickly turns into, who will survive, as all hell breaks loose.
Ruth Ware does it again. One Perfect Couple is another gripping, edge of your seat adventure that you will devour from beginning to end. Twisting a little murder mystery with some Bachelor in Paradise, Ware captures reality through the eyes of the one person who doesn’t even want to be there. Lyla was absolutely the best choice to use as a lens for this one; she’s smart, intuitive, and unsure of her boyfriend is her forever man. Exactly like any television show producer would make the decision.
The cast of characters that Ware assembles are exactly who you would expect them to be. The self-absorbed and attention seeking types are vibrant and annoying, showing off glamorous looks while deception creeps in from the shadows. There is plenty of action, and not even the kind you’re probably thinking. Ware cleverly weaves deception and mystery through the bungalows and sand. Frightening at moments, yet college frat-boy dumb at others, the cast will hold your attention as they precisely execute Ware’s creativity. I try and avoid the Bachelor style shows at all costs, but Ruth Ware forces you sit and enjoy this beautiful train wreck and you’ll have to know who loves in the end.
