James Patterson and James O. Born strike again to thrill readers with a fast-paced extremely suspenseful story that kicks off with a bang and ends with one as well. Once the book’s got you in its crosshairs (pun warranted), there’s no escaping; you’re in for a roller coaster of a ride.
When a sniper employs deadly precision in dispatching seemingly unconnected civilians from a distance, Detective Michael Bennett is paired up on a time-sensitive investigation with Officer Rob Trilling, a former Army Ranger and sniper with NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit. As Bennet and Trilling chase leads, the latter seems to know a lot about the way the crimes were perpetrated. Experience with rifles or something more sinister? Detective Bennett must figure out if he can trust his new partner and how to stop the mysterious sniper from taking more lives.
Crosshairs is an uncannily simple and effective thriller in its mission to pack limitless amounts of suspense in its pages. Patterson and Born make sure readers are wracking their heads in anticipation of the grand reveal about the identity of the sniper, casting suspicion on many characters including the seemingly straight-shooting Rob Trilling. It’s this nail-biting intensity of the narrative that propels the story ahead at full speed. The dialogue is sprinkled with witty banter from Bennett as he brings a realistic tone to the grim tale, sidestepping the impossible to stay in the intersecting realms of plausible and entertaining. Even if you haven’t followed Detective Bennett’s journey, you’ll easily gel with the easy-going characters and fast-paced investigation.
Crosshairs is a gripping race against time narrative with bodies piling up faster than you can guess who the killer really is. It hits you fast and hard.
